WHAKATŪ, AOTEAROA

The Jewel in the Brown

Exhibition

Walking, Observing, Gathering fragments from an accidental collection piled along the length of a beach where I regularly walk.

Entangled, entwined, eroded.
All displaced, yet all connected.
All connected, yet each unique.

All brown.

Shit brown, dirt brown, golden brown, chocolate brown.

Like any colour, brown is never just brown.

I feel connected to the collected fragments as part of my personal sense of being and place.

Through decorative and functional interventions, I honour the journeys of all the fragments, exploring their many connections and possibilities, taking on a sense of responsibility, of care, recognising the Jewel in the Brown.

Individually and collectively, these works invite us to think about origins and pathways, impermanence and resilience, diversity and connectivity.

They continue their journeys as precious objects, assuming new relationships to our bodies, our clothing, and the spaces we call home.

Padma Naidu

An architect and maker for over 25 years, Padma has exhibited in both Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.

Her process always starts with the materials.

Materials at hand, gathered, repurposed and locally sourced, referencing place and arrival to place.

She is curious about how connections can be simultaneously delicate and robust and offers suggestions as to how things could be but is not fixed on the final.
