‘Materialise’ marks the culmination of HANDSHAKE 8, a two-year professional development journey for 11 contemporary jewellers. Participants have refined their practices through online and in-person masterclasses, art history lectures, and mentorship, including a video presentation workshop led by Catalan jeweller Estela Saez-Vilinova.

Throughout the programme, these emerging artists have collaborated closely, sharing experiences and building leadership skills while striving to achieve their artistic goals. The resulting exhibition showcases diverse material and conceptual approaches, reflecting Handshake’s commitment to innovation and exploration.

Now in its 13th year, HANDSHAKE is an arts mentorship programme founded by M101 for independent Aotearoa jewellery artists. The programme provides invaluable opportunities for experimentation, feedback, and development, supported by renowned national and international mentors. For participants, it offers a unique platform to create meaningful works that reflect their evolving artistic identities.
