Justine is completing her MFA at Massey University Toi Rauwh_rangi, making tool-ornaments for buildings and their people, which are intended as counter-memorials to events in our colonial history. Her practice explores the understanding, interpretation, and purpose of ornament in the socio-historical context of Aotearoa New Zealand.
She is guided by her relationship with place, buildings, and processes of decay, the work emerging from attempts to problematise colonisation and settlement here by recasting familiar objects in an unfamiliar light. The employment of repetitive, cumulative processes sits closely with the subject matter, resulting in work imbued with a sense of discomfort.
