Knuckle Sandwich

Exhibition

Knuckle Sandwich ; "A person's fist connecting with another person's mouth, as if the latter were eating a sandwich."
This saying stuck in my head from childhood when my rebel grandmother would humorously hold up a hand full of glistening diamond rings and ask: “Want a knuckle sandwich?” I credit her for my long career in jewellery. There were no toys in her home, just an exquisite jewellery box she allowed me to explore. The curiosity in small objects grew from there. I have created my own range of Knuckle Sandwiches to sink your teeth into.

Wider bands with tactile repetitions of wrapped silver and threads of solid gold to accent. These intricate woven textures are created using the Japanese wax working technique called Mitsuro Hikime.

This exhibition runs beyond the NJW official dates - 10th April - 30th April.

Louise Douglas

Louise brings together a love of art, nature, and fashion to create her keepsake pieces. With an organic aesthetic borne from an upbringing in nature's surroundings, her jewellery designs express memories of a childhood spent exploring the native forest and seaside.
Louise relishes in the process of bringing small objects into the world and sending them out to evoke curiosity and beauty.

Starting her first jewellery company at age 18, Louise sold work to design stores in her home country of New Zealand. She then went on to design collections in the United States for private label and runway at large fashion jewellery houses in NewYork City. Her work has been sold to high-end department stores, galleries and exclusive boutiques throughout Japan, the US and NZ.

Her current work draws influence from classic victorian and art nouveau jewellery, with her own modern twist. Sometimes playing with the relationship between beauty and decay, she encourages the viewer to appreciate natureʼs subtle imperfections.
