Introduction to Argentium

Workshop

Curious about Argentium silver? This class is the perfect introduction. Understanding Argentium offers greater versatility in design and a fun way to expand skill levels. Argentium contains no copper, the element responsible for fire scale, and behaves uniquely it balls rather than pits, fuses and solders easily, and is very soft when annealed but very hard when work-hardened.

In this introductory class, participants will learn fusing techniques and the best scenarios for fusing. They will create quick projects, such as a ring and a short chain or earrings. The class will cover tips for annealing, work-hardening, and finishing Argentium. It is hands-on, with participants using torches, a rolling mill, and hand tools.

Michelle Hales works as an artisanal jeweller in Brisbane. Hales design practice is led by
a desire for versatile, innovative and functional jewellery that holds the story of its
creation. In this way she explores connections both in the technical functionality of a
piece, and emotionally, between maker and wearer. For Hales, connections create
opportunity and dynamism, bringing form, function and provenance together in endlessly
interesting ways.
Hales has a Bachelor of Arts in International Politics and a Bachelor of Social Science in
Community Development. She also has a Graduate Diploma in Education and a
