WHAKATŪ, AOTEAROA

Held, Seen, Heard.

Exhibition

"Held, Seen, Heard" is an innovative collaboration between composer David Long and jeweller Kelly McDonald. Long, normally found composing film scores, shifted focus to create a composition inspired by the visual and tactile elements of McDonald's jewellery-making.

Instead of drawing from his vast collection of instruments, Long collected the sounds of McDonald's making processes. McDonald works predominantly with discarded domestic and industrial metal artefacts and whether it was the rhythmic tapping of a hammer against an anvil or the scraping of rust from old metal signs, these sounds became the foundation of Long’s composition, giving voice to the silent work of the creative process.

The project blurs the boundaries between visual art and music, exploring the idea that creation is a multi-sensory experience. "Held, Seen, Heard" invites the audience to experience the intersection of sight and sound, where the act of creation is both seen through the jeweller’s hands and heard through the composer’s arrangement.

This exhibition runs beyond the NJW dates: 10th April - 8th June

Kelly McDonald and David Long

Kelly McDonald is an artist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. Her work is a playful investigation of materials and their previous lives. McDonald’s childhood growing up near the largest brown coal deposit in the southern hemisphere informs her visual language. She collects discarded domestic and industrial artefacts, deconstructing, reconstructing, and arranging them, bringing these potent, much-handled objects into surprising new relationships with each other and the body, in turn, transgressing the boundaries of wearability, and creating a subversive material language that speaks directly to the territories between people and things.

David Long is a musician, composer and producer, with a career spanning 40 years. He has composed scores for over twenty feature films and worked on numerous projects to critical acclaim including best TV score at the 2020 and 2022 APRA Awards for the BBC dramas, The Luminaries and Mystic respectively. He has worked on all of Peter Jackson's films of the last two decades. He released the solo albums Ash and Bone in 2022, I’ll Hum the First Few Bars in 2023, and All things, will stay, silent in 2024. He was a founding member of The Mutton Birds and performs with two bands, The Labcoats and Teeth.
